Title: Application of Nature Inspired Optimization in Recent Power System Research

Abstract: Research in power system optimization evolves from focusing on conventional planning such as unit commitment, load flow, economic despatch to more advanced problems. These including adapting with renewable energy penetration, electric vehicles, smart grids and most recent on extreme weathers. Some of the research had explored natured inspired optimization such as Genetic Algorithm, Particle Swarm Optimization and Evolutionary Programming as a tool to obtain optimal planning and operation of power systems. The main aim of this talk is to discuss the application of natured inspired optimization techniques in recent power system research. The current challenges on power systems, mainly on renewable energy and extreme weather will be discussed. Potential researches in relation with these challenges will be presented with the application of natured inspired optimizations. Finally, few examples of research work on the use of natured inspired optimizations will be presented to give some ideas on the applications.
